Some months ago, the new Consul General in Hong Kong Mr. Dieter Lamlé asked us whether with our network we could arrange a visit of a container terminal and a container vessel. Yes we could.
Thanks to the great support from the managements of OOCL, Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT) and our sister port in Shenzhen, the OOCL Germany vessel visit was fixed for 1 February, 2018. Early morning, several groups of guests left from Hong Kong, Guangzhou and other locations in Shenzhen heading for the port of Yantian in Shenzhen. The guests of honor, Consuls General Lamlé and his colleague Fleischer from Guangzhou, were accompanied by managing directors of the German Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and Shenzhen as well as a handpicked group of German executives from the region.
At YICT, the Managing Director Patrick Lam gave a warm welcome to the guests and introduced the history of the City of Shenzhen, the development of the small fishing village Yantian to one of the world leading container terminals. YICT is well prepared for interested visitors. A special exhibition is showing the history, operational and financial developments of the terminal and community.
This was followed by the second part of the program, the visit of the "OOCL Germany". Along with its five sister ships, it currently is the largest container ship in the world with a length of 400m and a slot capacity of 21,314 TEUs. The OOCL Germany was delivered in the 4th quarter of 2017 and is performing her 2nd round voyage between Asia and Europe. The first ship of the series, the OOCL Hong Kong, was officially certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest container ship. Captain Jeremy Peter Ayling of the OOCL Germany enjoyed various high-ranking visitors.
The summary for Ms. Thiesen and HHM at the end of the day: Praise from all sides, also from OOCL and YICT and thus a further strengthening of our very good relations to Shenzhen and to customers of Port of Hamburg in Hong Kong and South China.
